MILWAUKEE (AP) — The first sign of discontent regarding Craig Counsell’s decision to leave the Milwaukee Brewers to manage the Chicago Cubs appeared in his hometown at the Little League field that bears his name. The sign was covered up Tuesday morning, one day after the Cubs landed Counsell with a five-year deal worth over $40 million. “I give Craig credit for helping to build that, and for adding all these coaches, all of whom have stayed. Counsell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday the opportunity for a new professional challenge and the proximity of Chicago made this opportunity appealing. Neitzel said he believed Attanasio would have received most of the criticism if Counsell had ended up managing any opponent other than the Cubs.

The Cubs squandered a six-run lead and lost 7-6 when right fielder Seiya Suzuki whiffed on a fly ball in the eighth inning. He hit a two-run triple in the loss and is hitting .364 (51-for-140) over his past 37 games. Taillon has not faced the Braves this season. Atlanta is six homers short of tying the major league record set by the 2019 Minnesota Twins. That leaves him one short of matching the modern-era franchise record (since 1900) set by Eddie Mathews in 1953.

Marcus Stroman will make his first start in nearly two months on Saturday when the Cubs try for a second consecutive victory over the Colorado Rockies, who have lost their past eight road games. In a surprising twist, Chicago manager David Ross ended his press conference following the Cubs' 6-0 victory over the Rockies on Friday by proclaiming Stroman (10-8, 3.76 ERA) as his Saturday starter. Stroman went 9-4 with a 2.28 ERA through his first 16 starts, but he went 1-4 with a 9.00 ERA in his next seven starts before landing on the IL. In his past 34 games, Suzuki is batting .359 (46-for-128) with nine homers, 29 RBIs and a 1.112 OPS. Suzuki went 2-for-2 against Chris Flexen, Colorado's scheduled Saturday starter, during the Cubs' 6-4 loss to the Rockies on Sept. 12.

September 12 - Amid a heated pennant race, the Chicago Cubs have been forced to make some tough decisions. The Cubs will send Javier Assad (3-3, 2.83 ERA) to the mound while the Rockies will throw Chris Flexen (1-7, 7.36) in a matchup of right-handers. He has faced the Rockies once in his career, on Sept. 18, 2022, at Wrigley Field. The Rockies took a 4-3 lead into the ninth inning on Monday but couldn't hold it. He will face the Cubs for the fifth time in his career -- his second start -- and is 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA against them.

Ke'Bryan Hayes homered and added an RBI single, Bryan Reynolds hit a two-run double, and Alika Williams had an RBI single for the Pirates, who have lost three of four. That chased Bido for Ryan Borucki, who gave up an RBI single to Candelario for an 8-1 Chicago lead. Suzuki's two-run double in the ninth provided breathing room.

That means avoiding a two-game home sweep at the hands of the lowly crosstown-rival White Sox on Wednesday night. "We've just got to move on to (Wednesday)," Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks said. Assad didn't allow a baserunner over 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the White Sox on July 26. Despite an overall rough season for the White Sox, Clevinger seems content with his current situation. It's uncertain if White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson will be available after he was scratched before Tuesday's game due to a stiff neck.

August 8 - A season that began with World Series aspirations turned into a nightmare long ago for the New York Mets. Alonso, Lindor and the Mets will look to earn a rare series win Tuesday night when New York hosts the Chicago Cubs in the middle game of a three-game set. The Mets snapped a six-game losing streak Monday night when Alonso matched career highs with two homers and six RBIs in an 11-2 victory. "It's a hard game," Cubs manager David Ross told MLB.com. Taillon earned the win on Thursday, when he allowed two runs over five innings in the Cubs' 5-3 victory over the Reds.

Bankrupt Alex Jones owes almost $1.5 billion in court-awarded damages to Sandy Hook families. His wife shared a video of him on Thursday complaining that authorities want to take his cat. Jones' wife, Erika Wulff Jones, posted a bizarre video on Twitter on Thursday of her husband complaining about the authorities' attitude towards the pet. "They were very serious about the cat and its value, and they may want the cat for the Sandy Hook families," he said. Jones' personal bankruptcy has so far protected him from paying out defamation judgments and creditor collection efforts, but he is required to list all the personal and household items he owns.
